Each year in the UK we go throw away over 1.2 million tonnes of electrical and electronic waste. That is the equivalent of 150,000 double decker buses!
This increase is mainly down to:
- new technologies being developed
- affluent society
- throw away lifestyle
Over 75% of waste electrical goods end up in landfill, where lead and other toxins contained in the electrical goods can cause soil and water contamination.
This can have a very harmful effect on natural habitat, wildlife and also human health. When situated near populated areas these toxins can cause problems to communities as their water and soil is polluted.
Many of the electrical items that we throw away can be repaired or recycled. Recycling items helps to save natural finite resources and also reduces the environmental and health risks associated with sending waste electrical goods to landfill.
To minimise our impact on this earth and to protect the environment for future generations it is important that we are all aware of the consequences of our actions and how we can make a difference.
This is a lot of electrical waste! So to reduce the amount of electrical items going to landfill the government has introduced some new regulations called The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulation 2006 is a regulation designed to help with the disposal of electronic and electrical equipment.
As we are covered by the WEEE directive as a retailer, we will offer you the ability to bring back your old fitness equipment to us, when purchasing
a new piece of fitness equipment. There are 2 methods available for you to do this:
- Bring you old fitness equipment to us at our warehouse in Wakefield.
- Send via a courier your old fitness equipment to us at our warehouse in Wakefield.
Please note, that we can arrange for the delivery to be made back to us, and the ability for us to deliver the new piece of equipment and collect
the old one at the same time, you will however be liable for additional carriage charges for the return of the goods, including surcharges to areas listed under the terms and conditions, here.
We will only charge you for shipping the goods to us, we are NOT charging you for recycling the Electrical Equipment.
Once we have received back your old equipment, we will then strip the goods for parts, then send the goods to an authorised recycling center for
treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal.
Items that are covered under this scheme are identifiable by a logo on the box the product comes in, which is an image of a crossed out wheeled bin, such as this:
Products that have this symbol on the packaging should not be be disposed of seperatly from normal household waste.
